Youth orgs instead of SK council, says DILG

MANILA — Instead of a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) council, the government is planning to include existing local youth organizations in the deliberations of the development plan and managing the budget with the youth representative.

This was the clarification made by Local Government Secretary Jessie Robredo when he met with the SK Reform Coalition and Akbayan Youth Tuesday.

Robredo earlier proposed for the SK council to be abolished and only one youth representative to be elected as part of the barangay council.

The youth groups lauded the clarification together with some agreed amendments between the two parties.

“There are already existing organizations so why not use them as youth representatives?” Marlon Cornelio, Akbayan Youth Secretary General told Sun.Star.

Besides the creation of a Youth Consultative Body or Youth Development Council, the DILG Secretary also agreed on increasing the age bracket of youth participants from 15-17 to 15-25 in order to broaden participation and representation of the sector.

Akbayan Youth president Machris Cabreros said the DILG Secretary committed not to abolish SK but to carry out massive reform measures to empower the institution. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
